The 19th Century Reconstructions

Restoring the Theater of Pompey in the 21st Century:

The 19th Century Reconstructions

Victoire Baltard

Baltard’s reconstruction remedied all these problems. In both design and masterly execution in water color, his elevations are clearly superior to those of Canina. His archeological map precisely outlines  the modern blocks on the site; it marks the ancient Theater walls and diagrams his two excavations (in the Largo dei Librari (which he calls “Place di Ste Barbara). and in the Piazza dei Satiri). Adjacent sections and elevations on the same sheet provide a section of the surviving remains and detailed renderings of elements of construction: of the exterior and interior arcades, of interior doors, of masonry types, of red and gray granite column shafts, and of the two famous statues of Pan now in the Capitoline Museums.
